What’s Next for Travel in 2009?

Sometimes getting away from it all is the only cure for an overworked mind, particularly one shouldered with economic burdens. As 2008 ends, the Web is playing host to a barrage of speculation over where people will be traveling in the new year. Luckily, prices on certain flights and hotels could be falling to record lows.

According to columnist Christopher Elliot of MSNBC, travel in 2009 “will certainly be different than in years past.” He offers nine travel strategies, including becoming a “price-watcher” and driving to your destination. “At the rate things are going, the summer of 2009 may be known as the summer of the roadtrip,” Elliot writes.

Across the pond, U.K. newspaper The Guardian presents top adventure travel destinations for 2009, including a place called Snowdonia in a secretive part of Wales. Luxury camping in Madagascar and hiking in Greenland also made the colorful list of possibilities, along with several other international locales.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times is asking readers for their 2009 travel plans. The most intriguing destinations will be featured alongside LA Times staff picks at LATimes.com/travel2009 in the new year.

Snowdonia in Wales is definitely on my list. I want to stay in this Gingerbread Cottage owned by the National Trust there: http://blogs.nationalgeographic.com/blogs/intelligenttravel/2008/12/spend-the-night-in-gingerbread.html
