As we transition into autumn, the travel section of findingDulcinea will trade beaches for foliage. In preparation, I did a Web search for fall travel ideas and found a TripAdvisor survey with some intriguing results: More international travelers are planning to visit the southern United States than New England this fall; and among U.S. travelers, 26 percent hope to visit a winery, and 58 percent plan to attend a fall festival.

National Geographic's guide to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park outlines park tours and drives through the Carolinas, Georgia and Tennessee, as well as nearby national forests not-to-miss during peak leaf-peeping season.
Travel Max, a student travel site, has a search engine for worldwide events with a "Festivals and Heritage" section. Use this tool to get ideas before tracking down information on a specific event.
