People who live in or travel to cities do it because there’s such a range of activities available. But sometimes a wealth of choices means it’s hard to keep track of your options, or discover opportunities. Every city has a unique culture, and fortunately tapping into it is easier with a nudge from the Web.
A good place to start is Not For Tourists. Not For Tourists began as a printed guide to New York but now has expanded to a number of other cities while maintaining the same goal: to make everybody, whether they are old-time locals or total newbies, hip to the insider vibe of the city. News feeds and optional newsletters inform you of the latest events, activities, sports and art.
Choose a faster pace from more cities (30) with Going. Going’s aesthetic seems to mirror that of city life, and promises to make sure that you have somewhere awesome to go whenever you’re in the mood. Another perk of Going is that there is a social networking component so you can develop a profile, make friends and see who else is attending the events you select. You can even submit an event and invite others.
Metromix covers a few more regions and cities than Going does, and also has a slightly less interactive vibe; it focuses on bar and restaurant recommendations and serves more as a guide with editorial reviews. A big daily calendar on the homepage enables you to make plans on the fly.
Tourfilter will let you know about bands playing in your city; currently more than 30 are included on the site. You can also install iConcertCal on iTunes, which will create a calendar of concerts of the bands you have in your iTunes library.
If you live in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago or San Francisco, visit MyOpenBar to find free or affordable bar events in your city.
EventMe is a highly customizable site that asks you to fill out a survey for the events you are interested in (you can update your preferences at any time). Currently available for ten major cities, the listings come in the form of an e-mail digest, but you can also check your upcoming events on the site.
