The 81st Academy Awards are airing this Sunday, Feb. 22 on ABC. More than ever, 2009 is the year to have fun with the Oscars online. Clue in to wardrobe successes and mishaps, start an Oscar pool, watch trailers and clips of the nominees, or delve into ceremonies past for some dramatic and amusing moments.
E! Online features Oscar videos, news articles and photo galleries as part of their “Live From the Red Carpet” online programming. View coverage of the Grammys, BAFTAs and Golden Globes here, too.
BuzzSugar has excellent coverage of the Oscars, including a feature on best and worst dressed candidates of Oscars past, how to throw your own Oscar party and more.
The official Oscar site has a “Behind the Dress” fashion segment, a “Live Challenge” for predicting the winners and loads of multimedia on this year’s ceremony as well as Oscar nights past.
The New York Times allows you to create your own Oscar ballot to share your predictions with friends and colleagues. The Times also has clips of many of the nominees.
It’s not all about 2009, as Mental Floss reminds us with “7 Great Oscar Night Surprises,” which includes Katharine Hepburn’s 1933 win for “Morning Glory” (Katharine the Great was considered “box office poison” at that point in her career) and Marisa Tomei’s 1992 win for “My Cousin Vinny” (Tomei is nominated again this year for best supporting actress for her role in “The Wrestler.”) What surprises will 2009 bring to the ceremonies?
The Daily Beast’s “Oscar Speech Dos and Don’ts” is an entertaining look back on some memorable Oscar speeches that will tide you over until Sunday night. In video format, the compilation includes Sacheen Littlefeather’s protest speech on behalf of Marlon Brando in 1973 (if that doesn’t ring a bell, just watch the video, and about a dozen more).
You’ll find sites like these in our Oscars Web Guide. Enjoy the show!
